Step-by-step: download invoices from N26

  1. 1

Sign in to the N26 Web App

Go to app.n26.com and sign in with your N26 credentials, confirming on your phone when prompted. The Web App mirrors the mobile app but gives you a bigger screen, which matters once you start downloading paperwork for more than one month. If you hold both a personal N26 account and an N26 Business account under separate logins, make sure you land on the correct profile before you start hunting for statements.

  2. 2

Open the main account and go to Downloads

From the Home tab, click into your main account (the Main Account, not a Space). Under the balance summary you will see a Downloads section, which is where N26 keeps every document the bank generates for you. The German UI labels it Dokumente; the English UI uses Downloads. Both land you in the same place.

  3. 3

Pick balance statement or activity report

N26 splits its documents into two families. Balance statements are the monthly Kontoauszug, generated automatically at the end of each calendar month, PDF only. Account activity reports cover a custom date range you pick yourself and are available as PDF or CSV. Monthly closes almost always want the balance statement. Tax prep and reconciliation against bookkeeping usually want the CSV activity report.

  4. 4

    Download the document

For a balance statement, click the month you need and hit Download. For an activity report, set the start and end date, choose PDF or CSV, and click Download. N26 statements are valid official bank documents under German banking law and do not need a signature or stamp to be accepted by auditors. Rename each file with a pattern like period-n26-account so your accountant can find it later.

  5. 5

Grab subscription invoices from a different place

Subscription fees for N26 Smart, N26 You, N26 Metal, N26 Business Smart, N26 Business You, and N26 Business Metal are billed monthly. They post to your account as regular internal transactions, not as a separate itemized invoice PDF. If you need a formal invoice for the plan fee (for VAT reclaim on a Business plan, for example), request one through the in-app chat under Help. N26 support issues a PDF invoice on demand within a business day or two.

About N26 billing

N26 is a German neobank. That single fact changes how the paperwork works compared to Wise, Revolut, or any US fintech you may be used to.

The monthly Kontoauszug is a legal document under German banking law. Subscription fees for N26 plans are an internal transaction, not a standalone invoice. Spaces each have their own statement. Miss any of those three details and your month-end close has a gap.

N26 does not issue a separate PDF invoice for the monthly plan fee (Smart, You, Metal, or the Business equivalents). The fee posts as a line on your account statement. If your accountant needs a formal invoice with a VAT breakdown, open Help in the Web App and ask support to issue one. Expect a one to two business day turnaround.

About N26

N26 Bank AG is a German direct bank founded in 2013 by Valentin Stalf and Maximilian Tayenthal, headquartered in Berlin and licensed by BaFin and the European Central Bank. It serves personal customers across most EU countries and offers business accounts for registered sole traders and freelancers. Personal plans range from the free Standard tier through N26 Smart, N26 You, and N26 Metal. Business plans mirror the same structure (Business Standard through Business Metal) at matching price points. Because N26 is an EU-licensed bank rather than an e-money institution, its statements are legal bank documents accepted without a signature by German tax authorities and EU-wide auditors.

Why people stop doing this by hand

A personal account, a single Space, a free plan: the Web App is fine. The pain starts the moment you use N26 as a working business account.

A sole trader on N26 Business Metal with three Spaces (operations, VAT set-aside, tax reserve) has four separate document trails every month. The monthly Kontoauszug lives on the main account. Each Space has its own. The Business Metal subscription fee sits on the main statement as a line, but the accountant wants a formal invoice for it, which means a support chat. Annual tax statements drop in a fourth section once a year and are easy to forget until March.

Multiply that by a freelancer running two N26 accounts (a personal one and a Business one), and the monthly close routine is ten or twelve documents pulled by hand. Most German bookkeepers accept the CSV activity report directly into DATEV or similar, but they still expect the PDF Kontoauszug as the document of record. You download both.

N26 is one of the portals our Chrome Extension auto-detects. Install it, open the N26 Web App, and the extension captures new balance statements and activity reports in the background. No OAuth setup, no bank-credential sharing, no clicking through each Space separately. It works alongside Inbox Ledger's bank statement upload feature, which parses N26 PDFs and CSVs into line-item transactions for reconciliation against your invoices.

Next step

If you use N26 for casual personal banking, the Web App is enough. If you run a freelance or sole-trader business on N26 Business, hold multiple Spaces, or need clean monthly paperwork for a German bookkeeper, connect N26 to Inbox Ledger and let the statements come to you every month.

Where to look in the dashboard

  • Home → pick Main Account → Downloads is the primary location for balance statements and activity reports
  • Spaces → open any Space → Downloads holds a separate document trail for each sub-balance
  • Settings → Documents holds the Steuerbescheinigung (annual tax statement) and other compliance paperwork
  • Help → chat with support is the only way to request a formal PDF invoice for an N26 plan subscription fee
  • Settings → Language controls whether future PDFs come out in German or English

Before you start — quick checklist

  • Balance statement PDF is downloaded for every month in the accounting period you are closing
  • Activity report CSV matches the exact fiscal period boundaries you reconcile against, not just the calendar month
  • Subscription fee for your N26 plan (Smart, You, Metal, or the Business equivalents) is reconciled on the statement, even if it lacks a standalone invoice
  • Document language on the PDF (German or English) matches what your accountant or tax authority expects
  • If you use Spaces, the main account statement covers the main balance while each Space has its own document trail
  • The account holder name on the PDF matches the legal entity that owns the account (personal name for freelancers, company name for incorporated businesses)

Pro tips

  • N26 is a German bank (N26 Bank AG, licensed by BaFin and the ECB). That means statements follow German banking conventions. The monthly Kontoauszug is a legal document of record, and closing the account does not automatically forward historical PDFs anywhere. Download your own copies regularly instead of trusting the Web App as a permanent archive.
  • Subscription fees for N26 plans are deducted automatically as an internal transaction. If you are on an N26 Business plan and need a formal VAT invoice for the subscription, open Help in the Web App and ask support to issue one. The auto-generated statement shows the charge but not a VAT breakdown suitable for reclaim in Germany, Austria, or other VAT regions.
  • The document language in the PDF follows the language you set in N26 settings. If your accountant works in English and you set the app to German, future statements will keep arriving in German. Switch the language under Settings, then Language, and future downloads will match.
  • N26 Business accounts are available to sole traders and freelancers registered in supported EU countries. Incorporated companies are not eligible. If you run a GmbH or similar, N26 Business is not the right product and the statement structure will not match what a company auditor expects.
  • Spaces (sub-balances within the main account) generate separate activity reports. If you park VAT set-aside or tax reserves in a Space, remember to pull its report separately. Forgetting a Space is a common gap in N26 reconciliation.
  • Annual tax statements (Steuerbescheinigung for German residents, the equivalent for other markets) are issued once a year and appear in the same Downloads section in late January or February. They summarize interest earned and tax withheld at source. Keep them alongside the monthly statements in your records folder.
